   David Gerstel has been a licensed builder for four decades. He is the author of several books admired for their readability, humor, and for the clear and expert guidance they provide to both startup and veteran builders. Nail Your Numbers: A Path to Skilled Construction Estimating and Bidding, has been a construction industry bestseller since its publication.  Running a Successful Construction Company is often described as "a bible" of the construction industry.    

   Gerstel's newest book --  Building Freedom: A Construction Pro's Path to Financial Independence -- focuses on the practices  and principles that enable builders to arrive at financial freedom rather than seeing their companies collapse, the fate of the great majority. His articles for The Journal of Light Construction and for Fine Homebuilding and his guest appearances on construction industry podcasts are available at the blog section of this website..   

   Gerstel's interests in both construction and writing date back to his youth. He was helping out in a neighbor's wood shop and building tree houses while still in elementary school and was editor-in-chief of the student newspapers both in high school and  college. After completing his coursework at Brandeis University and University College (London, England), he fell in love with carpentry, went to work as a carpenter's apprentice, became a lead carpenter and project manager, and later founded a  construction company that enjoys respect for its upfront business practices and the integrity of its work.     

   David Gerstel has been described by a veteran contractor  as "the builder's builder whose supreme organizational ability has made him the go-to person for any construction pro with questions on how to improve their business."   Along with building and writing, Gerstel enjoys playing tennis, learning about diverse subjects from building design to investment, and spending time with his wife, Sandra.
