David Gerstel grew up in North Carolina where he began his construction career building tree houses and what he and his pals called "forts." He attended University College, London, England and Brandeis University in Massachusetts. There he was an honor student, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, and a varsity tennis player.
After graduation, David moved into construction, working his way up through the trades to become a lead carpenter. In 1976, he acquired his general contractor's license and started his own company. Together with his employees and trade partners he has renovated, remodeled and built from the ground up hundreds of structures, primarily homes.
David is the author of numerous articles for Fine HomeBuilding and the Journal of LIght Construction. His books about building and construction company management are described in the "Books" section of this website. They are admired for their expertise and appreciated for their readability and humor. When David speaks at construction conferences, he attracts standing room only audiences and receives rave reviews for the depth of his knowledge and the clarity of his presentations.
Along with building and writing, David enjoys playing tennis, learning about diverse subjects from construction technology and building design to investment; and, especially, spending time with his wife, Sandra.
